The Old Sod Folk Music Society is dedicated to developing and strengthening both a contra dance community and an audience for the performance of traditionally based folk music.
The Mission Statement above was reviewed and approved by the Board on 12 October 2021.
The Old Sod Society is a volunteer-run, non-profit organization in Canada’s national capital, Ottawa. The Old Sod Society organizes contra dances, our Hey Fever! contra dance weekend, a concert series, Family Dances, Folk at the Oak, and sometimes more. We are run by a volunteer Board of nine Directors, supported by our other volunteers who help out at dances, concerts, and other events.
Our contra dances always have live bands and are lead by a caller. Each dance is preceded by a brief lesson. Everyone is welcome at our dances regardless of age and experience, and beginners are always welcome. We aim to provide affordable, vibrant, and energetic contra dances that are fun, friendly, and inclusive.
Musicians and Callers
We offer dances with a variety of high quality local and “away” musicians and callers. Our concerts often feature touring musicians from overseas. We try to ensure that all of our musicians and callers have a positive experience when they perform at our Old Sod Society events.
We have special events at times, to strengthen our community, such as picnics, potlucks, and after-dance get togethers.
